Here Sawamura was definitely not holding back, it's just that his regular punches were not enough to knock Ippo out (only when Ippo used the classical dempsey he had a chance because he had the added strength of Ippo coming directly into the punch) and he couldn't defeat the new Dempsey roll.Īnd remember that if Sawamura hadn't cheated Ippo would have defeated him in the first rounds. Sawamura could have knocked down Ippo in the fourth round only because Ippo was so much an idiot to use the classical dempsey (a idiotic choice just like an ipotetic Miyata that goes in a slugfest with Sendo), but aside front the fact that I don't see any reason whatsoever to think that Ippo wouldn't have managed to stand up before the end of the count, when Sawamura decided to give his best he was defeated by Ippo's new Dempsey, so Ippo (with new Dempsey) > Sawamura bloodlusted. When they both went all out the stronger man won.
So it is not true to say that "he had every means to take him out but held back". Isn't the main reason Sawamura lost to Makunouchi though because he never truly bothered to just defeat him?
